News

After much deliberation, Mom and I have decided to close down the Harrisonburg location of Green Hummingbird Fair Trade Clothing.  Rising costs plus the time and effort that goes into running two stores, we feel, has started to outweigh the benefits of remaining.  But rest assured our location in the Dayton Market will remain open, and we hope to invest more time in pursuing off-site events such as festivals and conferences.  That being said, we will be having a lot of awesome sales and specials happening in May!  You'll definitely find some awesome deals!  The official closing is May 31--our lease will be up at the end of June and we will be spending that time moving out fixtures, selling furniture, and dismantling the famously gigantic dressing rooms. Thank so much to everyone who supported our first and primary location for these past eleven years.  The time has come to focus on our location in the Dayton Market, and we will also be seeking more vendor opportunities.  We hope we will continue to have great success selling beautiful and unique fair trade clothing and accessories.

Our Store

Founded in 2014, Green Hummingbird combines Eleanor's love of clothes with her passion for Fair Trade.  Our products come from all over the world, mostly from small industries that employ local techniques and styles, giving many items a unique, international flair.  Unlike fast fashion, the store's wholesale partners work directly with the artisans and workers to insure fair wages and safe working environments.

The Story, Our Story, Your Story

The name “Green Hummingbird” comes from an African story, as told by the Noble Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai. The story takes place in the middle of a forest. One day the forest caught fire, and all the animals stood by, watching in horror as their homes slowly burned to the ground.

But a little hummingbird, determined to make a difference, started flying to a nearby stream, scooping some drops of water into her beak, flying back to the fire, releasing the drops in an effort to put out the flames.  She did this over and over again, until the other animals noticed what she was doing and chided her for it. “What are you doing?” they asked. “You are not doing any good, you are just a tiny hummingbird!” The hummingbird simply answered, “I am doing the best that I can.”

Our small business cannot create a better, more just world alone. But we can make a difference in the lives of our artisans and their families. When you shop at The Green Hummingbird, you are also making a difference. You aren’t helping a millionaire get a second beach home. You are helping real people with real hopes and dreams, both in Virginia and around the world.

Thank you for visiting us.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to sell clothing made through fair practices by artisans who are given a decent living wage. In doing so, we aim to provide our community with beautiful clothing that tells a story. Together we can help ensure that those who make these wonderful clothes are paid enough for their work, and prevent the spread of “fast fashion” practices that are threatening artisans around the world.
